Event Photography Essentials: What's in Our Camera Bag
When shooting events, being prepared is everything. You never get a second chance to capture those special moments, so having the right gear ready to go is crucial. Here's what we bring to every event photography assignment at Minneapolis Paparazzi.
Cameras: We always carry at least two professional camera bodies. Currently, we use the Canon EOS R5 as our primary and the Canon EOS R6 as backup. Having two cameras also means we can have different lenses mounted and ready to go.
Lenses: Our workhorse trio includes a 24-70mm f/2.8 for versatility, a 70-200mm f/2.8 for candid shots and ceremonies, and a 35mm f/1.4 prime for low-light situations and environmental portraits. We also pack an 85mm f/1.4 for portraits and a 16-35mm f/2.8 for venue and group shots.
Lighting: Even with great camera sensors, proper lighting is essential. We bring two speedlights with wireless triggers, light stands, and modifiers including a 43-inch collapsible umbrella and a compact softbox. For red carpet events, we also pack a more powerful strobe system.
Accessories: Extra batteries (at least 4 for each camera), multiple memory cards, a sturdy tripod, a monopod for quick mobility, lens cleaning supplies, and gaffer tape (which has saved us countless times).
Bag setup: We use the Think Tank Airport Security V3.0 roller bag for most of our gear, plus a smaller shoulder bag for quick access items. Everything is organized with dividers and labeled for efficiency.
The most important thing to remember is that the best camera is the one you have with you that you know how to use well. Gear is important, but your skill, creativity, and ability to anticipate moments matter more than having the most expensive equipment.
